What does it take to get your CV or resume to surface on the online services?
There follows advice and tips on filling in online job applications and CV or Resume submission services.
- Follow the Directions and instructions on how to fill in the forms.
There is nothing worse that having to try and decipher a report which is computer generated where irrelevant information is entered or information appears in the wrong place.
- If you are unsure as to the correct way to make the application or have any doubts then don't be afraid to stop and contact someone in the company to guide you.
- Don't copy chunks of your CV from other places. You will need to customize your information specific to the job you are applying for.
- You may use buzz words or industry specific terms as employers search using keywords they will probably be searching using some of these terms.
- You could also create a list of skills. Add facts and figures where relevant. If there is no place to insert this on the form then you might be able to paste it into a comments section. This goes towards making your application stand out a little more.
- Complete as many of the fields on the forms as possible... even those that are not required.
- The formatting of online forms is difficult as most often you have no idea how it will be read. Will it be read as a full page in a browser or as a 62 character wide email? You have no way of knowing. Basically you should avoid fancy fonts and colors as best you can. Most online application forms don't like special characters or text formatting. The best way to make something stand out is by CAPITALIZING it or At Least Capitalizing Every First Letter.
- If possible you should spell and grammar-check before submitting. I normally copy and paste everything from the form into my word processor then back to the form again after corrections have been made. Get someone to proofread it first to iron out all of those resume writing mistakes.
- This will be your first impression and therefore you should make it a perfect as possible.
- Try to find a use for the comments section if you can. It will break the monotony of the person who is sifting through the applications and also it will show that you have a little more to you.
- Follow up your online application by sending an email to the person who's recruiting or maybe even a telephone call.
With more companies finding their employees on the internet it is now obvious that you will have to be more innovative and find new ways to draw attention to yourself. Writing a resume today requires advertising and copy writing skills just to break through the mass of applications for each job.
