Resume Formats
We have some basic resume templates and resume examples you can download and use as a guide which should help you when trying to choose the correct resume format.
Resume Format:
There are several different formats that you can use for your resume; each format will highlight an aspect of your skills or of your duties in a particular field. If you are looking for catering work then the format of your resume should be pointed towards professionals in this area, listing your qualifications and abilities would be important here.
If you need to write an executive resume however, listing your school and your high school diplomas and achievements would be certainly out of place. If you are applying for a job that asks for a high school diploma then it is quite ok to simply state in the cover letter that all the requirements for the position have been met.
If you are writing a resume to get a general job then the format you will chose should show all the skills and experience you have that might be relevant and that might show your perspective employer what you are capable of. If you are applying for a job in a company in general and do not really mind which job then you should show in the format that your are capable of performing wide spectrum of diverse tasks.
The format of your resume in general should include the following aspects;
- Qualifications obtained
- Experience you have gained
- References - both personal and professional
- Special Accomplishments you may have achieved.
It is up to you to tailor the format to suit the kind of job you are seeking. For example, for a sales job you will need to demonstrate past achievements and a little of your personality too. (More like a CV - see updating your CV).
It is best to present your resume in a plain font such as Roman and normally written at 12 points with slightly larger and bolded headlines. Most employers skim the CVs and resumes so you might as well make it easy for them to do this, therefore you can tell them more about yourself than the other applicants and give your resume that extra edge and the possibility that it might be read through entirely.
